Swim Test Information

All new applicants must pass a timed 100 yard swim test at one of the scheduled locations.  The 100 yard distance is 4 lengths of a regulation high school pool.  The Junior Lifeguard program is not a swim school and therefore requires above average swimming ability to participate.

All NEW Program Applicants will be required to complete an “Underwater Test” before taking the applicable swim test for their age.  The Underwater Test will simply require the applicant to dive to the bottom of the pool and retrieve a swim ring.  Maximum pool depth will be 7’ or less.  Watch this video to see what the testing process and program details are all about.

Swim Test Times

The maximum acceptable times for the 100 yard swim are as follows:

Ages 9-11 C's 1:50 minutes or less
Ages 12-13 B's 1:40 minutes or less
Ages 14-17 A's 1:30 minutes or less

  • B's - ages 12 and 13 years
  • A's - ages 14 - 17 years

Preparation

In order to give your child the best possible opportunity to qualify for the JG program, it would be advantageous to have them start preparing for the swim well in advance of the May tryout swims. Contact a community pool or age group swim team to assist them in meeting the swim standards. Please check our Swim Preparation Programs page for more information.
